This is where you can ask me questions about any stock you may want to short. If you are going short a stock and want to broadcast it to everyone here, post it here. If you like a stock for a possible short in the future, post it here.

No New Swing Shorts For Wednesday As The Market Is Still Not In A Confirmed Bear Market
By MauiTrader

3 out of 4 stocks follow the trend of the market. The trend is starting to change but before it does, IF IT DOES, it is going to get very choppy in the short term. With only two distribution days on the markets, there still needs to be a couple more distribution days before we are for sure this market is done. Nobody says a snap back rally can’t occur here. The best time to short most stocks, according to history, is a couple of months or more AFTER their top. There is still plenty of time to go short, if this is the start of a real bear market. I would not short here and since I know that emotions are high I am not even going to post short candidates as I do not recommend going short yet. If I change my mind, they will be listed below.

No New Swing Shorts For Friday As The Market Still Has Not Confirmed It Is Ready To Go Into A Long Solid Downtrend
By MauiTrader

This market still has some life in it. Even though I am declaring the bull market off the July/Aug lows over, I still am not convinced the market wants to start a solid downtrend yet. Until there are more distribution days on the indexes, it is still too early to operate on the short side. The greatest traders never forced trades when they were not certain about the market trend. Right now we are at that inflection point. We have to wait and see how the market responds to all of this wild and crazy action before I will feel comfy operating on the short side.

If this were a bear market, this is yet another chart I would love to be short. If you take a look at all the charts I have posted the past two weeks, in here, I think you will see the short side is doing well already. So you can imagine the power of these patterns in an all-out bear market.

No New Swing Shorts For Monday; Four Stocks That Might Make Great Shorts
By MauiTrader

The market still has not failed a rally yet so I still don’t feel comfortable going short until the market shows me it has failed on the bull side.

“At other times, a topping market will recover for a couple of months and get back near or even above its old high before breaking down in earnest. This occurred in December 1976, January 1981, and January 1984. There’s an important psychological reason for this: The majority of people in the market can’t be exactly right at exactly the right time. In 1994, the Nasdaq didn’t top until weeks after the Dow did. A similar thing happened in early 2000.
“The majority in the stock market will be fooled first. This includes both professional and individual investors.”
-William O’Neil, “How To Make Money In Stocks”

Last year I jumped the gun and shorted way too many stocks early on in the breakdown. Even though the market went down, I did not do well on the short-side. The reason was that it was not a real bear market. It was just a downleg (May 2006-July 2006) in an overall bear market. You will see I did have some nice winners. Unfortunately, I had more losers that covered the wins. Hence, why I do not short unless we are in a real bear market.

However, if you are a bit more risk adverse than me, I will let you know that if this market was in a pure downtrend with constant rallies on low volume and heavy volume selloffs, there are four stocks I would love to be going short.

For me, personally, it is still not the right time to be shorting stocks but so far most of the shorts I have offered up as nice chart patterns to short in bear markets are already working and working well in AHM and NDE.

Here are some charts that are clearly broken and if we were not down so far so fast I would love to short. I assume most of these will have low volume rallies offering secondary shorting points

After further review I have decided to skip KSE as a good short. In fact, it is a horrible short. The beta is very very low, it pays out a 4.7% dividend, and on top of a 9-10% margin rate, you can forget about making any money on that one.
Posted by: MauiTrader, Wednesday, March 7, 2007, 9:03:54pm; Reply: 37
Just because I am not shorting now, it doesn't mean you can't. I am very disciplined. But if you are already ready to short, you can see everything is working out fine. OMG lost 4.37% today. On margin, you just made an overnight 8.5% gain.

If this was a clear bear market I would be going short these three stocks (clear bear market means 5 to 7 distribution days in past month and a failed low volume rally....like the one we are having now).

I am covering 25% of all my shorts taken this morning, except MTG. I did not get filled on SNY.

The market looks like it made a decent short-term low today and many of the shorts I just took look to be putting in some form of a "I am not ready to be shorted yet" signal.

These stock with the damage that they produced yesterday should have tanked today. The fact that they did not clearly tells me this market is still too young to short or go long.

No new swing shorts for Monday as the market is starting to offer up a lot of pretty young speculative stocks to go long. Even though this market has NO quality stocks breaking out of fresh bases, and lower prices would seem to be expected the way the market is acting, it is still not time to short stocks. Why? Because there are still breakouts in the speculative crap. Big caps and speculative cheap-junk lead at the end. The uptrend isn’t over yet.

No new swing shorts as 3 out of 4 stocks follow the trend. As you can clearly see, the trend is up. The greatest traders of all time NEVER invested/traded against the trend. I do not either.

No new swing shorts for Monday as the market is in a rip-roaring speculative stage of this bull market. Not the best for growth investors as this is a risky market with more downside to worry about than upside. But the amount of speculative longs and some good CANSLIM longs showing up make this market unshortable.

There is no doubt things are starting to look and get rough out there.

I still am not shorting the market as it is not in a confirmed downtrend with multiple distribution days. But the distribution days are piling up a few more and a downtrend will get me bearish on this market.

Another interesting item today is the amount of short candidates in good short positions in my scans. Like I said, I am not going short yet, but if this market was in a downtrend I would short all of these charts: BDY LII AVB PHLY AVA DHR. I would also want to go short HCN and EXR but if you go short these stocks you must see a follow-through to the downside immediately as they both yield dividends over 5%. As a general rule, do NOT short stocks that pay a dividend yield over 5%.

The market is showing signs of cracking but that is no reason to rush to short a market that doesn’t want to seem to ever stay down. When it is time to short, trust me, I will be shorting. No New Swing Shorts For Friday But If You Want To Take Some Be My Guest.

The trend isn't down in enough time frames for me to want to start shorting. Normally, I like to short the leaders like GOOG and AAPL when the market rolls over. But it is obvious the market is very weak here and there are some juicy charts out there ripe for a short. The only caveat is that you better hope the markets keep selling off or you are going to be in for a painful short squeeze. I ALWAYS wait until weeks to months after a market top to short because history shows that is when the old leaders really start to selloff. We are only in a short-term downtrend, so the overall headwinds is still for sideline cash to buy the dips. Until we fail the old highs and roll over below the 50 dma, there is no reason to be shorting here, imo.

Today’s action is exactly why I do not short a market that is in an uptrend on a long-term, intermediate, and sub-intermediate time frame and is above its 50 dma. It is a lot smarter and wiser to not be a top caller and actually wait for the trend to be down before shorting. A lot of people, once again, sold longs for the sake of being fearful. It cost them today.

This market is still in a clear uptrend and the only people shorting this market right now are the uninformed, arrogant, and just plain stupid traders. The GREATEST TRADERS OF ALL-TIME NEVER BET AGAINST THE TREND. All trends are up so there should be absolutely NO shorting. The money is being made in the longs now. The daytraders that I observe all day long shorting this breakout and that breakout are either losing money or if they get it right they get maybe a 3% to 5% move. Considering how many longs I am holding that are up over 100%, it should be clear to others that the ignorant and wrong play right now is shorting stocks.

Do you see why trying to guess tops and why shorting a rising market is the play of stupid arrogant egotistical individuals. History has shown these fools OVER and OVER that this is the wrong play. Yet, they keep on doing it. That is why the NYSE short interest ratio is near all-time highs. They simply have to try to outsmart the market. There is no reason to be short here, unless you hate GWB or are a depressed waste of space. The time to short will come....it definitely is not now. With NYSE short interest ratio near all-time highs, the market in a clear uptrend hitting all-time highs/six-year highs, and with 70% of the ignorant-to-the-facts public thinking we are in a recession, you better believe it is NOT the time to be shorting stocks.

Heck, I can not even find good short setups out there that would make for great shorts in a bear market.

The market sold-off hard today but the volume on the Nasdaq was below the 50 day volume average, the NYSE volume was barely above that line, both indexes are still above the 50 day moving averages, the put/call ratio jumped to .9, most leading stock show no signs of severe selling, and I saw TONS of people top call today's selling. So I would not get to freaked out about today's action. Until we are below the 50 dma and I have stocks breaking down everywhere, I continue to believe via the facts/stats that are available to me that stocks should continue higher. It isn't going to be a nice smooth uptrend anymore. That is obvious. With this being summer, a very choppy few months are to be expected. I just don't see any major top happening when 70% of the misinformed public believe we are in a recession. Markets don't top with that much pessimism.

The market is starting to show signs of cracking, despite leading stocks still holding very well. If the market falls further, rallies on lower volume to the 50 dma, and then sells off again on higher volume, you will definitely want to get more cautious. If that is the case we may be able to start probing some shorts. But it is still way too early to be getting too excited on the short side. There are still plenty of stocks making very large overnight gains (short killers) that make shorting this market still not the right play as we are still too early.

THURSDAY'S SHORTS FOR FRIDAY: NONE

FRIDAY'S SHORTS FOR MONDAY: HBC TROW AZ CB WFC AXP (remember, I am not buying more than $500 in ANY of these; we are still not in a true bear market when leaders like RIMM AAPL GOOG BIDU GRMN and DECK are still moving higher and/or not breaking down)
