Sterling's balance sheet is in fair shape but the company lost over $5,000,000 last year.  Most of this was due to exploration and administrative costs.

This PR brings quite an optimism.

Sterling Mining is Ahead of Schedule at Sunshine Mine; Production Set to Commence December 2007

WALLACE, Idaho--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sterling Mining Company (OTCBB: SRLM - News) today reported that progress at Sunshine Mine continues and presently is ahead of schedule.
"Adding experienced personnel has enabled us to accelerate progress on various projects at Sunshine Mine, and push us ahead of schedule. To solidify our operational structure, we have also appointed Frank Maciosek Mine Superintendent and Jim Campbell Maintenance Superintendent; Joe Guardipee and Don Williams as Mine Foremen; Steve Gravelle as Electrical Supervisor; and Wayne Chambers as Maintenance Supervisor. The combined experience of these individuals is more than 200 years," said Mike McLean, Mine Manager.

Raymond De Motte, President, commented, "We expect to hire 5 to 10 employees each month this year, as demands increase ahead of starting production, which is now forecast for December 2007. It should be noted that this December start date is based on our current projections for delivery schedules of key equipment; recruitment of qualified operations personnel; and securing the requisite funding on schedule, any of which may be subject to change. We currently have 42 employees at the Sunshine Mine."

Progress continues on several fronts simultaneously at the Sunshine Mine:

advancing the Sterling Tunnel, where there is less than 850 feet to go to connect with the Silver Summit side of the Mine;
exploration drilling of Upper Country zones from the Sterling Tunnel; approximately 25,000 feet of drilling is planned to complete the initial program;
driving a new exploration cross-cut from the Polaris 1000 level, which has advanced 30 feet toward target veins;
equipment and infrastrucure renovations for the concentrating facility, including rebuilding the coarse ore feeder and a new power transmission line to the tailings pump house;
transformer and electrical switchgear are in place and structural non-destructive testing of the Silver Summit hoist have been completed; final engineering and equipment deliveries are in progress.

This is one of my favorite speculations simply because they bought the Sunshine Mine for a song and it is one of the richest silver mines in the world.  When the bankruptcy court sold the mine it went to Sterling because they were willing to pay cash.

but that is IMO, lol

Popeye, I share the same opinion. If Sterling has ability to bring Sunshine back to production, it would turn this  small company (only $73m) into the top silver miners in the world. And I believe, they would also get to AMEX and by this step attract the investors.

I agree Sapper.  Sunshine Mine was one of the top silver producers in the world and now Sterling is in control.

Now over halfway complete, the new Sterling Tunnel will provide a secondary escapeway and platforms for underground exploration drilling of new zones within the Mine.

Sterling Mining joined the ranks of silver producers in 2005 when its Barones Tailings Project of the Zacatecas Silver District began small-scale production in Mexico. Sterling acquired the property in 2004 and constructed 18 reinforced concrete vats, settling tanks, pipe work, recovery equipment and support buildings for its Vat Leach Plant. Currently the Company is working to optimize production and, to that end, a new crusher will be utilized to improve silver recoveries.

Sterling Mining has assembled a large exploration land package to support its future growth, with almost 40,000 acres of highly prospective, exploration ground including the Sunshine Mine, the Silver Valley exploration properties in Idaho and Montana, and production and exploration properties in Mexico.

With a substantial portfolio comprised of producing and advanced pre-production silver projects on top of a large exploration package of lands in highly prospective mining districts, Sterling Mining Company is poised to grow into a major primary silver producer.

For the long haul it would be a great holding. Also another one - MMG made a technical BO today.
