Vince,
In your opinion, what computers are the best bang for your buck (meaning overall quality compared with price).

Thanks,

best bang for the buck?

Well , I dont own any computers that weren't made by myself except for my laptop which is hp.

Ibm are one of the best laptops out there.

Getting most for your money for desktop, look at computers with the Amd processors 64 bit. Few more years down the road, the 32 bit processors(pentium) are going to start to be usesless for newer application and software.

Best bang for the buck chip on the market?

Amd 64 bit 3800+ x2, dual core chip, I designed a system 2 weeks ago with one,and its unbelievable how much power this chip has and overclocking abilities.

Vince,  the last CEO that ran HP changed the comany policy and put the very cheapest hard drive that you can find into some of their most expensive computers.  I know I bought one.  She only lasted one year but the HP reputation went down with that CEO.

Yea I know, I repaired Dell, Hp, Compaq,  a few ibm's, emachines and the list goes on.

I don't like any of them, most of the companies put in the cheapest crap possible. I lost a whole motherboard, ram , due to a cheap a** power supply in a mid range hp computer.

Thats why custom built computers are the best way to go. You know what you have in that box , and know you have quality parts. I build about 3-5 computers a month and never go cheap on any of the parts, only thing I go don't really care about quality are computer cases.Majority of them , who ever makes it, is fine, its just a metal box.

More I think about it , IBM is probably one of the higher ends, but I hate seeing computers that cost 1500 dollars which they actual cost is 500 if custom built.

Yes Vince you're right
I didn't mean I builded  the computer myself, yes I CONFIGURED it.
Systemax is located in Pa, and the shipping was not too bad at all,
because I live just outside Philly, Pa.

Best thing to do is buy ur own monitor, staples has a sale for a 17 inch lcd screen for 99 dollars, check out slickdeals.net for deals on monitors

1k is alot of money for a computer, what will you use the computer for? 1k can get you a top of the line gaming system, but than again whats the purpose of having that if ur not going to use it. Describe what you will use the system for and I can help you out

those dual core althon 64 3800 chips are a real nice feature having one of the best multitasking chip for one of the best prices on the market. have at least 1 gig of dual channel ram and make sure its expandable to 2-4 gig in the future, Sata II capable motherboard with a SAtaII 200 gig harddrive will be enough, a semi basic pci-xpress main card, this will be able to run 2 monitors, make sure it has two outputs.

have at least 380-400 watts power supply just in case you want more stuff in teh future

chip -260?
ram-80
motherboard-100
harddrive-80
case and power supply-60
video card-100
2 monitors 200-300
this is everythign you need not including mouse and keyboards and speakers and software
